Where did the volcano eruption of pompeii happen?

The volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius occurred in A.D. 79 in southwestern Italy, near Naples and Baiae. Mount Vesuvius was the volcano, and Pompeii was the city near the base of the volcano where humans, animals, and buildings were coated in falling ash and preserved until they were discovered over 1500 years later by archeologists.
